Our Indicators Checklist is a resource to help with communications difficulties and is designed to be used by adults working with young people aged approx 10 yrs to 17 yrs.
If you suspect a young person has difficulties in this area then it provides a starting point for considering carefully which aspects of the young person’s language are affected. This is vital as SLCN (Speech, Language and Communication Needs ) are very diverse, affecting young people in entirely dissimilar ways,
You will find an overview of SLI/SLCN, an Indicators Checklist which can be used to highlight the young person’s areas of difficulty and a section in which the checklist is combined with suggested causes and strategies to help.
These investigations should include the experiences of other adults, (including family), in contact with the young person. We strongly recommend the involvement of the local Speech and Language Therapy Service throughout this process of identifying a young person’s difficulties and deciding on appropriate support.
Please use this resource as a starting point, it is a guide only and cannot be considered exhaustive.
