SLI and Secondary School

There are legal requirements on the education authority and its staff to ensure that all reasonable steps are taken to make the curriculum accessible and to remove barriers to learning for pupils with additional support needs.

In every secondary school, teachers work with pupils who have speech, language and communication difficulties recognising and supporting the pupils’ language and communication and associated learning difficulties.

To support teachers, Afasic Scotland and Edinburgh City Council collaborated to develop guidance on including young people with a specific difficulty with speech, language and communication: "Including young people with speech and language impairments in secondary school" A copy of this guidance was provided to every secondary school in Scotland and can be downloaded here.

The guidelines, which include information on speech, language and communication difficulties, strategies for working with young people and CPD materials are also available at £10 plus £2 post and packing from Afasic Scotland.
