More than 1 in 10 children and young people in Scotland are affected by a speech and language impairment which affects their ability to speak up for themselves.

They have difficulty making conversation, participating in discussion and in stating their case for better understanding of their hidden disability.

Many of these children have difficulty in making sense of what they hear and in using their own language.

These children and young people need:

  • Acknowledgement that current mainstream education provision does not understand or meet their needs
  • Action to ensure teachers understand language development
  • Adequate Speech and Language Therapy services working collaboratively with education
  • Recognition of the impact of speech and language impairment on life long learning
  • Specialist provision to meet their needs

Afasic Scotland represents children and young people with speech and language impairments, working for their inclusion in society and supporting their parents and carers.
